You’ve reached our collection of Frequently Asked Questions - many of which have never actually been asked since we used our psychic powers to predict what you’d want to know. These abilities are not yet fully developed however so if there's something we’ve missed, please e–mail us or use the form.
New: What kinds of sites will you host?
Any kind! Our packages are designed with fansites in mind but if you need a host for your personal site, collective, blog, business, event or anything else we'd be happy to have you. If the packages aren't quite right for you, get in touch and we'll create a bespoke package to fit your needs.
New: Will you register my domain for me?
Whilst we can register domains, we're not as cheap as some registrars and since we're here to save you money, we highly recommend you use GoDaddy. GoDaddy are one of the cheapest whilst still being as reliable as much more expensive registrars. For the record, we get no commission so we wouldn't recommend them if we didn't believe them to be good however, we take no responsibility for any problems you might have with outside companies.
New: I don't have Paypal, how else can I pay?
We will accept cash, cheques and postal orders in Pounds Sterling (Great Britain Pounds - not Euros!). Please contact us first if you wish to pay by this method.
New: Can I host multiple domains with you?
Yes. The Mansion and Palace packages offer the ability to split the space over multiple domains. Alternatively you can contact us about creating a bespoke package just for you.
How come you’re so cheap?
Our prices are tailored to a lower-income market unlike the big hosts who cater for big businesses. We’re not in it for the profit and this is not our main source of income so as long as we have enough hostees at these low prices, we cover our costs and any extras such as necessary upgrades.
My friend says you host her for free, will you host me?
Probably not although Fan St. does offer free hosting from time to time. The sites we host for free are some of the best fansites around and usually belong to our friends.
What about subdomain hosting?
We sometimes offer subdomain hosting at no cost. If you would like to be considered, send an e–mail with either a screenshot or temporary site URL showcasing the layout you will be using to apply@fanst.net. We will accept only the best and you will not be required to display adverts. Space and bandwidth are negotiable, tell us what you need and we'll tell you if you can have it.
Do I have to link back to Fan St.?
In short, only if your hosting is free. However, some people choose to link their hosts anyway to save countless e–mails asking where they are hosted or just because they want to. If you are hosted for free, you need only link us once (although a link on every page is much appreciated!) and both text and image links are fine.
How do I pay?
Currently payment is by Paypal invoice only but in the future we will accept other methods via our shopping cart which is still under development. If you are on a monthly plan you will receive an invoice up to a week before your renewal date, you then have until your renewal date to pay it. For information on what happens after that please refer to the guidelines.
Can I have videos on my site?
Yes and no. Any videos you upload must be directly related to your website (so you can’t host files for someone else who hasn’t got the space).
You may not host film/music video clips unless they have been released for this purpose (e.g. movie trailers, promotional clips etc.). Any media files over 5mb (excluding still media such as images) must be placed in a zip file (to prevent streaming which uses a vast amount of bandwidth - this is for your own good). Will you design a website for me?
Yes and no. Fan St. will be offering a design service in the future but we don’t at the moment. However, if you have an account with us there are various tools included in your control panel to help you build a site. Alternatively, we highly recommend TwistyBot for any design or coding work you might need.
You host a Emma Watson/Elijah Wood/ site, do you know them?
Nope, not one bit. Fan St. is in no way affiliated or even in touch with any of the celebrities featured on the sites we host. The only one we’ve even seen in person is Terry Pratchett and he’s not as pretty as Emma Watson.
Can I buy hosting as somewhere to keep files for another site?
No. If you read the TOS it says that your files have to be directly related to your website. If you need a file storage solution, try megaupload.
Can I put adverts on my site? What about a donations button?
If you pay for your hosting then yes, you may but we’d prefer you didn’t use banner ads and especailly not pop-ups. Obviously it's up to you but Fan St. exists to provide the kind of low-cost hosting that means you don’t need to place unattractive adverts on your site. As for donations buttons, we think they’re an excellent idea as are affiliate programs with Amazon and other companies.
If your hosting is free then we do not allow banner adverts or pop-ups. We do permit donations buttons and affiliate links though since we appreciate that hosting is not the only cost a fansite incurs.
